Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips

Posted on April 18, 2016 by Judy Rom

The weather is getting warmer and energy levels are up! It's time to think about spring cleaning. This task can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Follow our top 10 spring cleaning tips and get your house sparkling for spring!

1. Work room by room

This allows you to really see the fruits of your labor. It also avoids half finished jobs. We suggest starting at the top of your house and working your way down. Working top to bottom and inside to outside will also help you avoid dirtying areas that you've already cleaned.

2. Clear out the junk!

If you haven't used it in a year then you don't need it. Once you've collected everything you don't need you can have a garage sale and/or donate unwanted items to Goodwill.

3. Tidy, dust, clean and vacuum

This order for spring cleaning is important so you don't have to do double the work. Imagine the scenario of vacuuming before dusting. Not pretty.

4. Tend to your walls and ceilings

Over time, an almost imperceptible grime will build up on your walls and ceilings. If you leave it for a few years it will become almost impossible to remove. To spring clean your walls, vacuum using the brush attachment and then wipe them clean with an all purpose cleaner.

5. Deep clean your carpets and curtains

To keep your carpets in tip top shape you should actually do this twice a year. Rent a carpet cleaner from your local grocery store or hire a professional. Similarly, dry-cleaning and washing curtains once a year is essential to keep them from rotting.

6. Let your mattress breathe

To extend the life of your mattress, flip it over and switch it head to foot every 3 months. This will help it maintain it's shape. And while you don't want to drag your mattress outside, a good airing will help to reduce allergens. Open your bedroom windows and let your bedroom breathe for a morning or afternoon.

7. Wax wooden furniture

Living in a dry Colorado climate, we know the importance of proper wood furniture maintenance. We recommend using Fiddes & Sons Supreme Wax Polish. Pick some up next time you're in the store.

8. Window washing

Let the sun shine in and clean your windows, window sills and window screens. Window screens can be cleaned by scrubbing them with a mixture of warm water and dish washing detergent.

9. Kitchen cabinets

Over time, build-up develops on kitchen cabinets. This can become especially bad if you don't turn on your exhaust hood while cooking. Do double duty and cut through the grime by using a cabinet cream. This will also moisturize your cabinet wood.

10. Share the load

Spring cleaning should be the whole household's responsibility. Assign tasks to your family members so that everyone chips in. As a reward for all your hard work, order pizza for dinner!
