A Guide to Finding Your Decorating Style

A guide to finding your decorating style

With so many beautiful and innovative home decor pages showing up on Pinterest and other social media channels, it can be challenging to identify the type of style that really resonates with you.

When it comes to designing your home, you want to make sure you style it in a way you truly desire, instead of investing time and money to create a space that was borrowed from a design book. It’s important to develop a sense of what you do and don’t like so that you’re happy in your space for the long haul.

Finding your design style doesn’t have to feel like a chore, and we’re here to help you along this journey. Here are five ways you can find your own personal style, and narrow down what does and doesn’t make your heart sing.

How to find your personal style?

Look at Your Wardrobe

You’ve probably received compliments or statements like “That shirt is so you,” or “I knew this was your style when I bought it for you.” If so, you’re closer than you think to finding your interior decor style.

The first step is to take a look at your wardrobe. Don’t simply look at the first thing you spot. Instead, take the time to look at all the patterns, colors, fabrics, and textures you feel drawn to. What are your favorite pieces? Do you have repeats of a specific type of garment? Are bold colors your go-to, or do you like timeless neutrals?

Once you identify your natural fashion tendencies, you’ll be able to use this as inspiration to find your interior design style.

Create a Moodboard

Did you spend a lot of your time in middle and high school creating collages with magazine cutouts of your favorite celebrities or icons? It’s time to relive those moments. Look at design and style magazines to find your inspiration.

Create a vision board for yourself - it could be certain colors you’re gravitating toward, a feeling of coziness or warmth perhaps, or a pattern or texture you really like. Once you have a mood board in front of you, you’ll start to realize what you like and want to see in your house and what you’re fine without.

Make sure you don’t limit yourself to the interior of your home. Your home’s garden, patio and porch need love too. With summer around the corner, what better way to spruce up your home’s exteriors than to decorate it with interesting finds. If you’re looking for some inspiration or aren’t sure where to start, check out this collection of antiques, specifically curated to add character to your outdoor spaces.

Go Digital

Don’t have the time to cut out tons of pictures and flip through endless magazines? You can create your mood board online too. This is where you log into your Pinterest account and create a board with all your ideas. You can get as detailed as you want.

For instance, you can categorize your inspiration posts by room, texture, color palette, and theme, or you can simply add all posts under a broader category of “home decor.” If you’re an antique lover and have discovered that you want to mix modern and antique furniture as your home aesthetic, we’ve got you covered. Our store is full of inspiration on ways to mix the old with the new. You can scroll through our own Pinterest collection for ideas, or check our store out in-person for some amazing timeless finds.

Make an Inventory of Your Home Decor

It’s time to take a stroll through your own home. Walk to each room with a notepad and jot down every furniture piece, art, or accessory you have on display. Next, create a list of which items you want to keep and which you want to give away. Once you’re sure of what furniture you want to keep, review the list to find commonalities among the pieces.

Take the list with you when you go shopping. If you have some timeless pieces, character-filled art, or accent furniture, you might want to add some antique furniture styles into the mix.

Nothing highlights stories, history, character, and art more than antiques. If you have a modern feel to your home, consider adding an antique accent chair or vintage lights and mirrors to add more character to your home. A combination of vintage and modern decor will make your home stand out, and add a lot of warmth and happiness to your space.
