Made of a cast iron base with four prong brackets at the end of each arm, this balance scale uses brass pans that rest in the brackets for calculating weight. Both of the pans are nine inches in diameter.
To calculate weight, items were placed in the tall pan. Then standard mass weights were placed in the shallow pan until the needle between the arms reached the middle of the center piece. Perfect equilibrium gave the weight of the items in the tall pan. The accuracy of the scale has not been tested.
