Dough Rising Bench

The dough rising bench was an important part of the home since bread was a common staple in the 1800s. Dough rising benches like this one were large enough for kneading dough in and holding large batches of dough while rising. The removable, sliding lid protected the dough from mice and bugs, kept warmth inside the box while the dough rose, and could be used as a tray to carry the dough to the oven. After baking, the bread could also be stored inside the box.
