Made of a cast iron base with four prong brackets at the end of each arm, this balance scale uses brass pans that rest in the brackets for calculating weight. One arm of the scale is stamped "5 kilo." Both of the pans are 11.25 inches in diameter. The accuracy of the scale has not been tested.
To calculate weight, items were placed in the tall pan. Then standard mass weights were placed in the shallow pan until the needle between the arms reached the middle of the center piece. Perfect equilibrium gave the weight of the items in the tall pan.
