Imaging ironing with this labor-intensive item! Used to iron clothing, linens, or fabric, this iron opens from the top so hot coal could be added to heat the iron. The pierced sides allowed air to enter the iron to keep the coal smoldering. The wood handle was an upgrade from previous irons made with iron handles that had to be grasped with a cloth to keep hands from burning. "Suddal Tested" is embossed on the top.
