Before the copy machine, there was the copy press. Presses like this one were used to copy documents using oiled paper, tissue paper, moisture, and pressure. The wheel beneath the lower plate of the press turns the screw to raise the plate, tightening it to apply the pressure needed to make copies. Documents to be copied were written with special copying ink. The amount of time needed to make a copy depended how recently the document to be copied was written. New documents could be copied within minutes because their ink was fresh. Older documents took longer. The top of this press is beautifully embossed with The Standard Copying Press Company logo surrounded by a foliated design. A reeded pedestal with acanthus leaves is supported by tripod feet cast with scrolled leaves.
