Firebacks like this one were once used at the back of fireplaces to cast heat forward into the room, radiate heat after a fire was out, and add craftsmanship to a home. The cast iron design on this fireback depicts two lions pulling a chariot transporting a rider of nobility. Two cherubim blowing horns sit on the lions' backs. Although only one cherub can be seen, the horn of the other is visible. Fortunately, the fractures along the bottom and side of the fireback do not diminish the integrity of it but leave the image intact and add to the character of the piece.
