English Carved Oak Sideboard Buffet with Liquor Tray

Crafted from beautiful European oak and finished with a dark stain, this Late Victorian sideboard from England showcases elaborate carvings and generous storage. The sideboard features a beveled, breakfront top with modified egg and dart trim and canted corners over a wide drawer flanked by smaller drawers. Beneath the drawers, the sideboard has two doors with an open niche between them. The right door opens to a single shelf, and the left door opens to a pull-out liquor tray with room to store 12 bottles.

Typical of English furniture during this time period, the Green Man takes a prominent role with his carved head at the top of the canted corner sides and on all three drawers. Intricately carved fruit and flowers cascade down concave canted corners below the Green Man. Additional fruit and flowers amid scrolled acanthus leaves adorn the top of the niche. Carvings on the doors include opposing creatures, fruit, flowers, scrolled leaves, and the faces of crowned women. The sideboard is raised on wide scrolled forefeet and block rear feet.

Condition: Consistent with age and use. Markings and former notches on the top surface indicate that the sideboard had an upper gallery at one time. Two small, newer pieces of wood were added to fill in the notches. Dings, scratches, separation, and stains. See photos.
