Surround and summer covers like this one were used over coal and small wood fireplaces. The surround created a frame which fit the opening of the fireplace. The door was removed when the fireplace was in use. These doors worked like today's glass fireplace doors, keeping cold chimney air from coming into the home in winter and cool air from escaping in the summer. Summer covers are used as home decor on walls, in windows, over mirrors, and as fireplace covers. The arched cover is 17" x 26".
