Pom poms made of caribou hair were used by North American Indians to decorate snowshoes. The purpose of the pom poms was to keep hunted animals from picking up the scent of humans and to seek the blessing of the animal spirits during the hunt. Later, with the arrival of Europeans, Indians began making their pom poms from colored yarn. These snowshoes have red and yellow pom poms. One of the shoes has a broken lace.
