This French lavabo from the late-19th century is wall-mounted on a lovely walnut board. Its copper melon shaped canister has a lid with a brass handle to keep the water clean and a brass spigot for dispensing water. A copper bowl below catches the water. The purpose of the lavabo is to hold and catch water for ceremonial washing during Mass. Lavabos are comprised of a ewer or container to pour water from and a bowl to catch the water as the hands are washed. Sometimes these sit on a table. Other times they are wall-mounted like this one. Today wall-mounted lavabos are often used in gardens to supply water for hand washing.
