Wooden salt boxes were used to keep salt dry, clean, and safe. They were made to hang on the wall or sit on a table or counter. This salt box has a hinged lid, decorative carving on the front, a scalloped backboard, and Queen Anne legs. The small drawer was likely used for storing matches since salt boxes were kept near the fire or stove.
