The first known wheelchair was designed for Phillip II of Spain in 1595. It had wheels, but he needed assistance to propel it. Over time, improvements were made. By 1900, most wheelchairs were manually propelled by two wooden wheels connected to two rubber, spoked wheels as with this chair. The wheelchair has a wooden frame with cane seat, back, and footrest front. It has a swiveling third rear wheel. It is in excellent condition but is missing some of the hardware. One of the front wheels has a small crack. Not intended for actual use.
