French Renaissance Revival Carved Hunt Cabinet

Fine craftsmanship and lavish carvings abound in this handsome Renaissance Revival Hunt cabinet, which was created in France in the late-19th century from European oak. The cabinet is two pieces with the top raised on carved pillars and a carved backboard. The top piece features a swan neck pediment that draws the eye upward to its central urn finial flanked by scrolls, which are adorned with clusters of fruit and scrolled leaves over a cornice of repeating flowers. Below the cornice, double doors with raised, carved diamond shapes amid scrolled foliage open to reveal storage with three adjustable shelves. Turned pillars at the sides are in line with the supporting pillars below. A remarkable carved backboard showcases a scene of hounds overcoming a wild boar. Opposing carved griffins on either side of this carving appear to be roaring.

Bowed at the sides, the cabinet's lower piece is 41.25 inches tall with a beveled top. Beautifully carved front door panels feature carvings of birds from the day's hunt suspended on a background of scrolled grapevines. Both side doors showcase their own version of an abundant harvest. The four lower doors open to a single removable shelf. Drawers over each of the four lower doors are ideal for storing small items. Tear drop pendent drawer and door pulls are lovely accents to this stunning cabinet. Photos of the upper and lower sections of the back of the cabinet were taken separately.
