Imaging ironing with this labor-intensive item! Used to iron clothing, linens, or fabric, the inside was filled with hot coal to heat the iron by lifting the latch at the front. The pierced sides allowed air to enter the iron to keep the coal smoldering. The wood handle was an upgrade from previous irons made with iron handles that had to be grasped with a cloth to keep hands from burning.
