Made of a metal base with four prong brackets at the end of each arm, this 5 kilogram balance scale uses brass pans that rest in the brackets for calculating weight. The shallow pan's dimensions are 7.5" x 1". The deep pan's dimensions are 8.75" x 4".
To calculate weight, items were placed in the deep pan. Then standard mass weights were placed in the shallow pan until the needle between the arms reached the middle of the center piece. Perfect equilibrium gave the weight of the items in the deep pan. The accuracy of the scale has not been tested.
